Jog-A-Thon

Friday, October 10th was our school wide Jog-A-Thon fundraiser. We were able to raise over $16,000! That's incredible!

Here we are getting ready to run.

It was a lot of fun getting to help our school by helping our bodies with a good run!

What are some other ways we can help take care of our school?

Cloudy With a Chance of...

As we finished our science unit on weather we read the book Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs by Judi Barrett. Many of us learned that the movie was based on this book!

After reading the book we did a writing activity about what we'd like it to rain. Here are a few of our responses.

Sweets were by far our largest type of food we wished would fall from the sky.

If you could pick one thing to rain from the sky, what would it be and why?

What are some differences between the book and the movie?

Any similarities?

Stop, Drop, and Roll

Continuing our discussion of fire safety this week, we learned all about Stop, Drop, and Roll today. We watched a catchy video to help us learn the steps to take if our clothing were to catch fire. A scary thought for us in 1st grade, but now we're prepared. We're so prepared that we decided to make a video about it. Enjoy!

Are you tuning in?

Yesterday as part of our Fire Prevention Week kick off we read the book The Gingerbread Man Loose on the Fire Truck by Laura Murray. We read the book again today, but before we did we talked about something that will make us better readers and ultimately better writers.

We learned how to TUNE IN to Interesting Words. This  means

  • listening for new words that we don't know
  • finding words that are fun to say
  • watching for new or more interesting ways to say something for example, saying scurried instead of went
  • and most importantly, having FUN with words

When we learn new words and what they mean, we say that we are expanding our vocabulary. When we have BIG vocabularies we become better readers and writers.

Here are some interesting words that we found during our second reading of The Gingerbread Man Loose on the Fire Truck.

Fire Safety Week 2014

Today kicked off our Fire Safety Week!

We discussed Sparky's 5 steps for fire safety:

  1. Floor Plan- make a floor plan of your home
  2. Know 2 Ways Out- make sure you know 2 ways out of each room in your home
  3. Smoke Alarm- have a smoke alarm on every floor of your home and in each room the people sleep in. Check them monthly!
  4. Meeting Place- have an outside meeting place in case of an emergency
  5. Practice- practice your emergency plan
Here are the links to the two videos we watched today about knowing two ways out.

How will you be rabbit ready?

What are some of the ways out of your home?

  • White House
  • Statue of Liberty
  • Lincoln Memorial (and many others!)

After our discussions, we made our own American Symbols Mini Book.
